Hello friends! Today I am sharing a very easy way to create gorgeous watercolor backgrounds for your handmade cards using liquid watercolors. Watercolor doesn’t have to be hard or complicated, in fact watercolor can be very easy and relaxing.
Video I am sharing today is a part of a special Watercolor Blog Hop hosted by Pinkfresh Studio. This is a Youtube hop, not a blog hop. Join the hop HERE by watching my video.
Liquid watercolors are just that – they come in a liquid form in a bottle and instantly give you vibrant results. These, like any other watercolors can be diluted with water to make colors less saturated and mixed together to create new colors. They usually come in a bottle with a little dropper and you can use the dropper to add watercolor to your palette or even to your project directly.

CARDS DETAILS
Watercolor is one of the hardest mediums out there, it’s the hardest one to master and I am yet to do that. At the same time watercolor doesn’t have to be a hard medium to use. Today I wanted to show you how you can create gorgeous fluid backgrounds using your liquid watercolor paints in no time and with minimum effort.
I used Arches Cold Press watercolor paper today for all of my backgrounds, this is my watercolor paper of choice and Liquid Watercolors from Pinkfresh Studio. I taped my watercolor paper onto a hard surface and pre-wet it using a wide flat brush to be able to do a wet on wet technique.
There’s no one set formula to creating watercolor backgrounds. No two backgrounds will ever be alike and one just has to accept that. I like to paint my watercolor backgrounds in layers – by applying the colors, drying my background a bit and applying more and more color on top until I’m satisfied with the result.
I used the same technique and identical supplies (but different liquid watercolor colors) and created 3 completely different backgrounds. I wanted to keep my watercolor backgrounds the “star of the show” on my cards, so I only gold or white heat embossed simple sentiments and beautiful floral clusters to compete my cards.
The key to creating beautiful watercolor backgrounds, I think, is picking the right color combination. Not all colors look well together or blend well together and some will give you muddy results. So prior to painting a watercolor background go ahead and pick the colors that not only look good together but also work well together in a watercolor world. You can look up watercolor background examples on Pinterest to get an idea of what colors you can use. Blue and green for example work well together and you can also add pink to blue to create purple.
Pink and yellow are a staple combination, I think, and also always give fabulous results. You can also add a bit of purple to them if you like.
Don’t be afraid to mess up – messing up is a part of the leaning process and if you mess up it means you are making progress. Flip your paper to the other side and try again. If you really don’t like your end results try die cutting something out of your background – you never know it might look awesome!
