Hello friends! Today I’m sharing positive and negative die cutting and showing how one die background can be used in 2 different ways. Sometimes I end up loving negative die cut elements even better than the positive, so I try to use them for my projects as well. And it’s a great way to stretch your dies and save paper!
I used a Framed Floral die from Spellbinders to create both of the cards I’m sharing today. The photo above shows the card using the die as intended – the positive die cut. Photo below shows the leftover negative pieces put together to form a fun background. Which one do you like best? I personally like the negative one better!
I started working on these cards by creating an ink blended background. I used Simon Says Stamp inks in Twirling Tutu, Doll Pink and Magnolia and blended a pink ombre background. I also coated the entire ink blended panel with a generous amount of shimmer using my Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pen.
Next, I added double sided sticky sheet onto the back of the panel and cut it out using the Framed Floral die in my Platinum die cutting machine. I made sure to keep the negative pieces and I only discarded the tiny flower centers.
I adhered both backgrounds onto either a card front or onto another panel. To turn these into cards I added “Love You More Each Day” sentiments created using Simon’s Kristina’s Love stamp and coordinating die set. I heat embossed everything in Antique Gold embossing powder. Finally, I embellished my cards using gold confetti.
STEP BY STEP
As I was making this card I took several photos with my phone to document the process (this project also was featured during my Simon’s Instagram Takeover back in December). I’m hoping you’ll find it useful! Feel free to save this photo or pin it to Pinterest to one of your boards! Click to enlarge it.

these are both so spectactular! I also think the negative one is the most unusual and impressive. Thank you for my first inspiration of the new year!
Both are super beautiful cards
I love this! Both cards are beautiful. I can’t wait to try it — just hope I have a cover die that will work. Thanks so much for the inspiration.
Beautiful cards! I love the negative technique as well!!
Hi Yana,
Two beautiful cards, stretching the use of a die. Something which is kin to my heart in crafting. Making a stamp or a die or a stencil do more than what it was first created for. The colour blend used behind the negative and for the positive is so vibrant. I don’t think I can choose between them for a favourite. Happy 2018! :O)
I like them both, but I think I agree with you – the one with the negative is a little nicer – I think it pops a bit more.
Gorgeous!!!! Happy New Year to you and all!
Two beautiful cards Yana! Love the ombre inking on them both!
Beautiful cards!!
