Hello crafters! Today I have an interactive Christmas card to share featuring the Spellbinders 2020 October Large Die of the Month. I call this an “Over The Top Christmas Card” as it is pretty detailed and not a card one would want to mass produce, not unless you simplify it.
I am a big fan of Spellbinders Club products. This month the Large Die of the Month is an incredibly gorgeous door die. I’ve wanted a die like this for a very long time and I couldn’t be happier with this die set – it includes everything one could possibly want to make a door card. My card is a Christmas card, but this door can be made into any occasion door. It could be a Halloween door, a Thanksgiving door, a Spring door, a Happy Valentine’s Day door – you name it.

CARD DETAILS & INSTRUCTIONS
Follow these steps to re-create this card:
- Die-cut door from red cardstock. Dry emboss using the embossing mat and plate in your die cutting machine. The door die makes such a cut so that the door die-cut remains attached to the panel, there’s a scoreline which turns into a hinge and allows the door to open and close. If you want to use just the door – you can cut it out along that scoreline.
- Die-cut decorative panel (window) from gold mirror cardstock, add double-sided adhesive sheet prior to die-cutting to have a sticky die-cut. Adhere to the door. Cut the same design from white cardstock, add dots of glue in the openings, inlay white die-cut pieces.
- Die-cut mail slot and handle from gold mirror cardstock. The mail slot has an opening and you can slide a letter, a tiny envelope into the opening.
- Die-cut envelope from white cardstock. It cuts a rectangle and a triangle and you just pop the triangle onto a rectangle and you have yourself a tiny envelope to put in the mail opening. Foam mount the mail slot with the envelope onto the card. Adhere door handle onto the card. Adhere small clear droplet onto the handle to make it dimensional.
- Die-cut & emboss columns, step, and valance from white cardstock. Die-cut column accent pieces from black cardstock. Adhere to columns. Adhere step and valance with glue. Foam mount columns using foam adhesive to add dimension.
You can also die-cut additional columns, adhere the flat column onto the card, and then add decorative columns on top with foam adhesive. Or die cut columns from fun foam and use that instead of foam adhesive, that would look the best.
- Die-cut door detail from white cardstock and adhere to the door for additional interest.
- Die-cut doormat. Cut the bottom part from black cardstock and top from kraft, adhere together and onto the card.
- Trim excess red cardstock around the door.
- Create a decorative panel to place behind the door. Use Simon Says Stamp Holiday Greetings Mix 1 stamp set. Heat emboss “Merry” in Antique gold embossing powder on kraft cardstock. Color berries using a red pen. Color leaves using a gold shimmer pen. Foam mount door onto the panel. Heat emboss “Christmas” in white on black cardstock. Trim to a skinny banner, form mount over “Merry”.
- Create a background panel (wall) using a Woodgrain stamp from Simon Says Stamp. Stamp image in watermark ink onto Kraft cardstock. Cut panel to 4 1/4 x 5 1/2″, adhere to the A2 white card base. Adhere door on top.
- Decorate the door to your liking.
I’ve cut the wreath for this card and also die-cut pieces to make a swag. I used dies from the Festive Noel Die set for this – I’ve cut all the greenery from light and dark green cardstock and adhered the light onto the dark and offsetting it slightly to have two-tone greenery pieces for the door. I added gold die-cut poinsettias and red glitter berries.
I love how this card turned out, even though it is quite over the top. Let me know what you think – is it over the top? It is too much?

It’s over-the-top gorgeous. I love it.
I think this card is fantastic. Its got so much pizzazz.Love it.
That is one seriously awesome card!!!! I have to say it caught my breath when you opened the door and there was the “Merry” inside. A truly beautiful and unexpected surprise. A couple of years ago I picked up a set that had a door to emboss and then some stamps/dies that went along with the set to decorate the door. I made 1 Christmas card with it because — like in your video — I went to town with the decorating!! It was fun. When I was done, I too thought I had done way too much and it was over the top. All I can say is, my friend loved it and appreciated all the detail. It was truly a labor of love and the card went to someone who understood and appreciated that. Enjoy your stunning creation and thanks for the video, Yana!
Your card is fabulous. It does have a lot of things on it, but that is what makes it so great. If it were me, I would use the card as a decoration in the foyer of my house. Put it on a small easel and display it that way. It would make a lovely Christmas decoration!!
Absolutely Amazing!!! Not at all over the top!!! Love it!!!!
I’ve been waiting for a great door die as well, that mail slot and tiny letter are the icing on the top! I’m a retired mail carrier and can’t resist this kit. Thanks for the video!
Oh my gosh! This card is so lovely and you must have had fun making it. Personally, it reminds me of the old farmhouse that I grew up in and it had those columns by the door. Outstanding!
I was just watching your video when my doorbell rang and there it was………..my club kits. I will be making my own “over the top” version of the door card shortly! YAY! I am usually of the “less is more” design corner but this card is perfection.
I love this die! It’s so versatile! The Christmas door is very pretty.
Love the design. Can’t wait to get mine.
Love your card. The door opening to display the ‘Merry’ inside. The festive wreath and bough. Beautiful.
So very pretty! And festive! Makes me smile.
