Simon Says Stamp | Wishing We Lived Closer

Do you wish you had more crafty friends living in your area? All of my cardmaking girlfriends live far, far away, many in different countries and I typically get to see them once a year at trade shows (that’s why I love going to these shows so much!) or crafty retreats or just connect with them via video chat. How about you? Do you have a crafty friend living nearby?

CARD DETAILS

Before I left for China (yep, we are still here – it’s one LONG trip, heading back home on March 18th) I made this super simple Color Blocked card for a crafty friend. In the comments to my previous post about Color Blocking Debbie asked a very good question:

Can you explain a bit more about color blocking? The idea is intriguing, but I don’t really understand the concept… I really like the pink and yellow together. Do the colors need to be the same hue?

It’s best to use colors that go well together. I know this is a very vague. When I work with color (and this is something I need to improve) I either “wing it” and hope that the colors I pick will look good together or I look at my projects with beautiful colors and use that as inspiration.

Google says: “…taking colors that are opposites on the color wheel and pairing them together to make interesting and complementary color combinations.”. I’m not one to know a lot about color theory (and it’s a shame, really), so to help me improve my skills I popped over to the OnlineCardClasses in hopes to go over “Introduction to Color Theory” class. If you struggle with color I invite you to do the same.

To make this card, unlike the other 2 color blocked cards I shared earlier, I used ink pads and ink blending tools. I blended Cloudy Sky ink in the top part of the panel and Fog in the bottom using washi tape to mask each section when I was doing my blending.

Once the ink was dry I heat embossed a gorgeous sentiment from the Everything Together stamp set in Antique Gold embossing powder and stamped a tiny “Missing You” in cobblestone ink.

  1. This is SO PRETTY, Yana! I think the powdery blue & grey is LOVELY together & SO CALMING! The gold embossing just makes this ELEGANT! No, I have NO “crafty friends” nearby. I craft alone. I like it better that way really. I’ve found when crafting with others, I’m expected to supply EVERYTHING! LOL It gets to be too expensive that way! I make “friends” online through companies, like yourself. SAFE TRAVELS as you are in China! HOPE you’re enjoying yourself!!! Would LOVE to hear of your travels there! 😉

  2. Thank you, Yana, for addressing my question. I describe myself as “color challenged”! Have had a color wheel for years but didn’t understand how to use it until more recently. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who struggles with colors that go together!!! I really like the background for your card and will give it a try with a couple of stamps I have that are large sentiment stamps. Great way to keep the card simple and let the sentiment stand out. Hope all is going well in China!! That certainly is one long, adventurous trip. I have one crafty friend who lives in Tucson and we just found each other about a year or so ago. It’s good to have someone to get together and craft with and/or just discuss what we’re doing. It’s inspiring and I feel very appreciative. I don’t get involved with social media but have found watching videos of crafters like you helps me to feel less alone with my hobby. Having a local friend to actually craft, get together and talk with is a treasure.

  3. This is really lovely Yana, I have yet to try this but I too am “colour challenged” (as Debbie described herself) and I really have to take other peoples successes or play around until I find something I like. However, the latter is not my fave way to go about this as I hate to waste my paper. LOL
Yes, I do have a few local crafty friends but because most of them have jobs (I do not), it is often hard to get together with them due to their schedules.
    Enjoy China and travel safe!
