Simon Says Stamp | Simple Watercolor Waves With Background Stamping

Hello, friends! Do you like to vacation during Summer? If so, where is your favorite vacation destination? Mine, perhaps not during Summer months as it’s too hot, is Sri Lanka. It is a perfect holiday destination in the cold Winter months as it offers nothing short of tropical paradise with gorgeous green-blue Indian Ocean waters, golden sand beaches and lush exotic vegetation.

When I was making this card, and dreaming of a quick getaway, I was remembering Sri Lanka.

CARD DETAILS

Simon’s new Waves background stamp inspired me to pull out my long-forgotten watercolors and try my hand at watercoloring waves. Truth be told, I had no idea where to start, but remembering the beautiful waters I saw in Sri Lanka I used a couple of blue and green shades from my custom watercolor palette and watercolored away.

I first stamped the background image in Versafine Onyx Black ink on Arches Cold Pressed watercolor paper. Having taped the paper down to a hard surface I wet it with water and began applying colors one by one creating darker and lighter areas where the waves met. I used the following Daniel Smith watercolor colors: Indigo, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Turquoise, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise, Cobalt Teal Blue, Amazonite Genuine, Fuchsite Genuine, and Duochrome Oceanic. Many of these colors are available in my Daniel Smith Dot Chart if you’d like to give them a try (watch THIS video to learn how to use this chart). To paint the sand I used Goethite-Brown Ochre and Transparent Brown Oxide.

Once the background was dry, I started painting in the sea foam. I had no idea how to do that but decided to try and use a dry paintbrush and white acrylic paint. Using a dry brush I applied the paint along the black stamped line to form the foam. Did it work? I think it did – the foam looks rather real. I alternated between brush sizes when wanting to create larger areas of sea foam.

Next, I stamped, colored, and cut out several images from another stamp set by Simon Says Stamp (my favorite from last year) – Surf’s Up to create a beach scene on this card. I did very simple Copic marker coloring and adhered images in place using glue and foam adhesive.

The sentiment was stamped partially on the background and partially on green cardstock, cut to a strip and foam mounted for some dimension on this card. Lastly, I couldn’t resist embellishing my card with several sequins from the Star Spangles set and Nuvo Drops in Morning Dew.

  1. Love, love, love your ocean!!! Thanks for the tip on creating foam. Beautiful card, Yana. How exotic (to me) to be able to go to Sri Lanka!! My favorite vacation spot? Any place I haven’t been to before. In Feb. I spent a couple of days in Northern California (hadn’t been there before) just sucking up the ocean and atmosphere. Hoping one day to do what I call a “family tree trip” to France and Germany to visit the towns where my ancestors came from. Been to both countries before, but not to the specific villages. SO many places to travel to and so much to see in the world … like Sri Lanka!!! Thank you.

Like what you see? Drop me a comment! Thanks!
