Simon Says Stamp June 2019 Card Kit – Sending Birthday Joy

Hello, friends! It’s the 14th of the month and that means there’s a new kit from Simon Says Stamp! I’ve missed quite a few of the previous kits due to my travels and I was so glad to receive this kit through the mail the other day. Nothing like opening a box of complete surprise goodies inside! I quickly set to play and made this easy watercolor Birthday card to share.

SENDING BIRTHDAY JOY – CARD DETAILS

I had some new watercolor paper samples in my stash that I’ve been wanting to try out so I pulled a sheet of Harmony Hot Pressed Watercolor paper by Hahnemuhle and stamped a beautiful floral frame in Onyx Black ink by Tsukineko. This ink will bleed from the water contact unless it’s heat set, so to speed things up and be absolutely sure I wouldn’t have any bleeding on my card I covered panel with Clear embossing powder and heat set it. This created a nice raised edge for my watercoloring.

Next, I set to color this beauty. I used several watercolor colors from my custom palette, some of my favorite colors of course. The flowers were colored using Quinacridone Rose – I first added a soft wash of this color over the entire surface of my flowers and next added the shadows using the same watercolor but in a more concentrated form.

The leaves were colored using several green colors – Sap Green, Serpentine Genuine and Olive Green. I also added a very soft watercolor wash in pink around several areas on the panel. Once the ink was dry I used a white pen and added a lot of highlights to the petals and leaves. My next step was to stamp & heat emboss “Sending” in the center of the frame; I also white heat embossed “Birthday Joy” on pink paper from the kit and after this, I splattered the panel heavily with Hero Arts Iridescent Shimmer Spray, this is not included in the kit and came from my stash.

I was very eager to play with the Glitter Duster and glitter included in the kit and after watching Tim’s video on how to use it (you can find it on the product page in Simon’s store) I applied a bit of glue over the flowers and dusted them with glitter. It was very easy to do and minimized the amount of glitter mess significantly, I look forward to using this tool again in the future.

I trimmed my watercolor panel to 4″ wide, also cut a thin strip of patterned paper from my kit, adhered it to an A2 card base and foam mounted the watercolor panel over it. Lastly, I added a light pink enamel heart and embellished this card heavily with sequins from my stash.
