Simon Says Stamp | Is It Time For Holiday Cards Yet?

Some will say it is, others – it’s not. After all, it’s only September and there’s still Halloween and Thanksgiving to be celebrated and cards to be made for. I love to make Christmas cards all year round as long as I’m in the right mood. Play some holiday tunes, find a good Christmas playlist on Youtube and craft away!

That’s exactly how this card came about – I was in my craft corner, playing with my supplies and just crafting for the fun of it.

CARD DETAILS

I used one of Simon’s stencils, the Holiday Foliage stencil, Schoolhouse Red cardstock, and Crafter’s Workshop Modeling paste along with Hero’s Gold Glitter embossing powder. I applied paste through the stencil, I removed the latter and added a generous amount of Gold Glitter embossing powder. It sat for about 5 minutes while I washed the stencil and the palette knife in the sink and once I was back at my crafty desk I heat set the powder and paste.

I also ink blended Royal Red ink from Hero Arts around the edges of the panel to darken them. This is where, I think, I made a mistake. I should have done the ink blending before applying the paste, it would have been evener. With the paste already in place, I had a hard time getting in the tight sections in between the raised paste areas and thus they remained ink-free. Still, I liked the background.

To make a sentiment I stamped & heat embossed “May Your Holidays Be Filled With The Joy Of The Season And The Coming New Year“. With a bit of masking, I stamped the middle part in Red Royal ink and heat embossed top and bottom parts in Antique Gold embossing powder.

It’s not the best holiday card, but I still like how it turned out. That stencil is so beautiful and will be definitely used again and again in my crafty corner.

  1. Stunning! Your cards are so rich and vibrant. And I know it wasn’t the look you were going for, but I think the way the ink blending worked out kind of looks like a shadow of the stenciled image. Beautiful!

  2. I love your Christmas cards and this one is no exception (and I understand this one is not your favorite). The schoolhouse red card stock looks like such a great red for Christmas cards. Like you, I love to make Christmas cards and have already started mine. Every year I start making them earlier and buy this year’s cool products for next year’s makes. Glad to hear I’m not the only one!!!! Look forward to seeing what you do this year. Thank you, Yana.

    1. A lovely Christmas card, Yana! Love the rich colors & that awesome sentiment stamp! I’ve been making Christmas cards all year with a couple friends & have a nice supply for this year but ‘m still going to have to case this one !! I love it!

  3. Yana, you are so seriously talented…incredible, really, Are you a graphic designer? How do you dream these designs up???!!!!! I saw the Flora Background card you made and immediately purchased it (thank goodness I jumped because now it is on reserve.) I just finished the card and my husband came in and he was blown away by how gorgeous it was. It was a poor substitute to what you did and I could count the flaws but still….stunning. When I see a post or a YouTube that you did I JUMP on it…because I know it will be amazing to read/watch. Thank you for the amazing inspiration you bring us. You really are incredibly talented.
PS: I always thought I was not supposed to use Copics on embossing but I am not sure why. However it worked great.
    So many thanks!!

    1. thank you, Amy! Your comment made my day! I am not a graphic designer, I studied biology and chemistry for 2 years in college and then switched majors to economics and cybernetics 😀 . I just like pretty things and I like them in unexpected colors, I guess. I have a video with a different card coming at the end of September showing a workaround for coloring with Copics next to heat embossing.
One isn’t really supposed to color with Copic marker over the embossing as the alcohol *can* dissolve the embossing powder and the powder will transfer onto the tip of the marker. But, I have never had this happen. But, I also never vigorously blend over heat embossing. I just lightly color next to it. I think this makes all the difference. Hope this helps!

  4. You are easily one of my favorite cardmakers, Yana! You have a magical ability to take the same supplies/tools that we all have and yet somehow your cards are always so elegant! Even your inking “mistake” created an interesting shadow-y texture around the border of this Christmas card. Truly Beautiful! Thank you for continuing to share your gifts and inspire the rest of us!
