It’s been awhile since I last picked up my colored pencils and did some coloring so I decided to practice a bit the other day and color a simple card. Since Fall I’ve been using my white pen more and more often (see some card ideas here and here) and for this card and exercise I wanted to try using both pencil and pen to see what kind of look and effect I could get.

VIDEO TUTORIAL
As always, I filmed a video tutorial showing how to create this project from start to finish. I’m hoping you’ll enjoy it. Watch it below or on my Youtube channel:

CARD DETAILS
I started making this card by arranging images from the Hero Arts You’re Beautiful set on a sheet of colored cardstock cut to 4 1/4 x 5 1/2”. I’ve placed the sentiment, it reads Dang, Girl, you’re beautiful and next surrounded it with flowers cascading from the top of the panel down onto the sentiment. Once everything was arranged to my liking I swung the door of my mini MISTI tool and picked up all of the stamps. I treated my paper with an anti static powder tool to help keep my heat embossing nice and neat and next inked up the images with clear embossing ink to stamp on the panel. I added gold embossing powder and used my heat tool and heat set the powder to melt it.
I grabbed my Polychromos pencil charts and of course my Polychromos pencils by Faber Castell and did a few simple color tests on the back of my panel to see how the colors that I had picked would look on this paper. I was not disappointed and proceeded to color the images. These particular flowers and leaves are very tiny, so there’s not much room to do lots of blending and shading, but this was exactly what I was going for. I didn’t want to pick a big bloom, spend a lot of time coloring only to discover half way that I don’t like the result. I used #157 Dark Indigo, #153 Cobalt Turquoise, #156 Cobalt Green and #154 Light Cobalt Turquoise colors to color some of the leaves blue. These colors looked especially gorgeous on this paper and I’m looking forward to using a larger image and coloring it using same colors on this colored cardstock.
For my greens I used #174 Chromium Green Opaque, #168 Earth Green Yellowish and #170 May Green – these colors are actually my favorite from my entire pencil collection and you can tell I’ve been using them a lot by the size of the pencils.
Next, for my pinks I went with #123 Fuchsia, #131 Medium Flesh,#132 Light Flesh and #101 White. I also used my white pen a lot here to color come of the smallest sections where I didn’t want to use my pencils.
Finally, I used same white pen to add artistic looking outlines to the flowers. This is not a look that everyone likes, I don’t like it on every card, but ever since I shared my faux calligraphy video, I’ve been keen on using my white pen in the same fashion again. So I used my pen to add partial outline to all of the images on my card. Not only did I outline the images, but I also outlined the sentiment on the bottom and I feel like it helped the message stand out more on the card.
I did use my white pen to also add random dots onto the background – I wanted to fill it in a bit and than I embellished my card using jewels from Pretty Pink Posh. The exercise was a success and I’m happy with the way this card turned out.
Have fun stamping (and coloring, too)!

GORGEOUS WORK, Yana!!! 😉 My green pencils are worn down too! LOL There are just specific colors I tend to use more than others! Your card is SO ELEGANT with the gold embossing & the intricate floral stamped images, along with the RICH card base! I’ll be listening for the name of the card stock! 😉 A SUPER JOB!!!!!!!!!! 😉
This is beautiful! I love the pencils on colored cardstock, by any chance do you remember which brand/color you used here? It’s lovely!
thank you, Candi! I can’t yet mention the brand/color of this cardstock as it’s a new product yet to be released later this month.
Ohhh suspenseful LOL, love it and can’t wait to find out more details when you can!
Gorgeous card Yana. I could watch you color all day! Still getting used to my white gel pen, thanks for the inspiration. Love the cardstock, it takes the color so well and that stamp set is beautiful. Love doing it all at once and heat embossing once.
Truly lovely card. I like your white pen detailing also.
Very sweet and I love the many, many little stamps that can fill in an entire background, but any way WE want. Adorable card.
Beautiful card! Thank you for the details and tips you shared in the video.
Your depth of color is amazing. I love the gold embossing on the teal background. I also want to thank you for also posting a text tutorial. I am older and prefer tutorials I can print out. I guess I just do not have the patience for the time videos take, nor the inability to print. You are very kind to include both. This card is truly magnificent.
