Hello there! Thank you so much for stopping by today to help celebrate Alcohol Marker Release from Altenew. This is something completely new and absolutely incredible! I remember how excited I was when Altenew came out with their first ink pads 2 years ago – they did not disappoint one bit. Hopefully, these markers won’t either (I am extremely happy with them so far).

I’ll admit, I was very skeptical about these markers from Altenew. I have Copics, I have Chameleon Pens, I even have Trimcraft First Edition Markers (also alcohol based). I didn’t think I’d like these by Altenew. But you never judge the book by its cover (not that there’s something wrong with the “cover” of these markers). I gave them a try – and oh boy!

I first tested these markers on a piece of Simon’s 120 LB White Cardstock (I love this paper for Copic coloring) – I colored from light to dark to see how the colors would blend, tried both nibs to see how they apply ink. I loved the result!

Next, I grabbed a sheet of Neenah Solar White paper (this is my most used paper for stamping) and stamped Altenew Adore You flowers and leaves using Simon’s Intense Black ink.

You can use these markers with Altenew existing inks for “no-line coloring” technique. You do have to use alcohol-friendly ink to color with these, so you can’t stamp ouline images with Altenew crisp dye inks and color, the outline will bleed.

The marker set being released today contains reds, blues and greens so I decided to use reds and greens to color my images. I went with “from dark to light” application and first added my darkest color, next my medium and blended everything with the lightest. I later came in with the darkest color again to intensify the shadows.

I did find those harder to blend on Neenah vs Simon’s 120 LB paper, but it’s harder to blend Copics there too. I will definitely have to play with these markers some more to learn more about them, but my initial impression is WOW.

One of the reasons I was on the fence about these at first is I decided to really commit to growing my Copic collection and to get to know my Copic markers better (I recently did Favorite Copic Color Combo chart & post). This was just my personal reason. Nonetheless, these markers from Altenew are a great alternative to Copics. I don’t want to do a comparison, but I will say – they are really great (and nobody is asking me to say/write this, I truly enjoyed using them). One thing I loved – the colors, like with Altenew inks, are grouped together for easy blending. I don’t know how well future colors will blend (and I don’t know if there will be future colors or if there will be re-inkers or replacement nibs), but they do take the guesswork of what colors to use together now.

I cut my colored images out and used a black marker to color the edges of the paper to hide the white. This set comes with a black marker, so I didn’t even have to reach for my Copic black. I also used a white gel pen and drew white dots in the flower centers.

I went with my Perfect Cardmaking formula and used an elegant gold trim, pretty paper – Spicy Yogurt, foam mounted flowers and leaves on top, added a simple Thank You sentiment and finished this card off with a few Rose Gold sequins and clear droplets from Pretty Pink Posh.

Before I go here’s a photo of my initial test doodling/drawing/sketching with these markers. I always appreciate photos like these, so I hope you’ll find it useful too (click to enlarge):

  1. I’ve been investing in my collection of Copics. It’s so hard to get certain colours and they are very expensive.
I think it’s fabulous there’s a new source of alcohol markers. Your colouring is stunning as always!

  2. Love your post about these markers! Your cards are stunning – as always – but I too have invested a lot in Copic markers and it makes me question even whether I should try these ones… But I love the fact that there are only 12 and that they blend so well… I may just have to break down and try them out too!

  3. Love the colors in this card! I just purchased some Bic alcohol markers yesterday. I wanted to try something inexpensive first to see if it’s something I might be interested in. I’ve always preferred watercolors but I love watching people color with the Copics. It looks so nice.

  4. Hi Yana! Your coloring for this card is beautiful! I do not have any alcohol based markers as of yet. I love watching videos of card makers coloring with Copics but I have yet to purchase any myself. Honestly, it just seems a little overwhelming. However, I really like that Altenew’s new markers come in a set so it takes the guess work out of it. The price seems pretty reasonable as well. Thank you for sharing your card and your thoughts!

  5. How lovely. . .your use of your standard “formula” for card making is perfect for highlighting your flowers–sets off the blending beautifully. Thanks for the tip for using the black marker to color and white edges.

  6. Yana- as usual your card is simply stunning! I really appreciate your honest opinion about the markers too. I have a fairly large assortment of copics but really miss the bullet nibs that came on the spectrum noirs I first used before switching to copics. This seems like the perfect blend of what I want plus a decent price. Like you however, I need to wait to see how many colors come out because I can do almost anything with what I have now.

  7. Your card is gorgeous! I have a decent amount of Copic markers and I’m not too skilled with them, but I DO like the fact that Altenew’s markers come in color families. They seem to blend so well.

  8. Your card is very pretty. I have a few 6-pen sets of Spectrum Noir alcohol markers. I have to say that I’m not thrilled with them. I’ve never tried Copics. Would love to try these affordable markers.

  9. I have only used alcohol markers in classes. I don’t feel confident enough to invest in the Copic and the Altenew is already sorted into good color combos. I want to try them. Loved your card!

  10. I love your card. It is stunning! I don’t have any alcohol markers yet. These seem like a good investment for a beginner since they are already into sets. So getting the right blend of colors will not be difficult. I also love the two tips which will be useful for many techniques, I think. And of course since they are from Altenew the quality will be top notch. I already have many of their stamps, dies and inks, all of which I love!

Like what you see? Drop me a comment! Thanks!
