I was very much inspired by the Cosmos BetterPress Plate from Spellbinders. Whenever I feel this way I know I better make a trip to my craft room right away and create. So I did. I wanted to do a video for this card, too, so I filmed one, I knew I wouldn’t have time to do my usual voice-over, so I recorded the video with narration. The sound quality is different here, please forgive me, it is not the best, I was testing out a new microphone and of course, not everything is set up properly. This is more of a real-time card process, I didn’t speed anything up, so you can see the card being made in a lot more detail and hear a lot more explanations from me. I might do more videos like this in the future as these take a lot less time to make, please let me know how you like them, I’d love to hear your feedback.

CARD DETAILS
The Cosmos Background BetterPress Plate is stunning beyond words. There is a set of layering stencils that coordinate, to color this image. Stencils are extremely helpful, especially if you enjoy ink blending. While I do have the stencils in my stash, I wanted to take a different route with this card, I wanted to use my alcohol markers. Plus I recently refreshed my Copic Marker chart, ordered some new colors (they are still on the way), and re-organized my refills.
I’ve not done this type of coloring in a long time and I’ve really missed it. There is something soothing about it. I love to color and I don’t do it enough.
I started this card by using a sheet of white cardstock, Simon Says Stamp #130lb (in my video I explain why I’m using this particular paper and not some other cardstock). Instead of using my BetterPress system, I used my Glimmer System and foiled this image in Polished Brass foil. Oh, how I love the look of foiling, especially with BetterPress plates, as they give a much finer foiled line.
Next, I started to play. And I do say play, as coloring to me often is paying. I knew I wanted to have a colored background, so the white of the paper would only be used to “color” the flowers white. Everything else was colored using Copics or OLOs. White pops against dark backgrounds (white on white looks great too, but it looks a lot more dramatic and impactful when there’s a dark background). I used my OLO marker to color the background dark green (again, watch the video for the explanations).
When it comes to white flowers, they are never really white. White has subtle shadows, hits of other colors, and highlighted areas. I used Copic markers in C1 and C3 to lay down the shadows and create folds in my petals. I also used FaberCastel Polychromors pencils (cool 1 and cool 3) to add even more details and fine lines.
I didn’t do much else to this card, as the coloring was already enough. I simply added my colored panel onto an A2 card base made from green cardstock and foam-mounted a foiled sentiment on top. Another Birthday card was done!

This card is dramatic and stunning. I always enjoy watching your coloring process, since I’m not very good at coloring.
thank you Susie! Practice does make better 🙂 I don’t think I’m good at coloring either, but with the help of some tutorials and coloring attempts I like to think I’m getting better at it each day
I loved your video and if it’s easier to video tape, it’s a definite yes! I’m always learning from you, especially in real time. You’re an amazing artist Yana, TFS!
yay! thank you for your feedback, Stephanie! I’m already working on my next one, filmed in the same way and it definitely going faster 🙂
