Hello, friends! I suffered from the worst food poisoning over the weekend and spend most of Saturday and Sunday in bed. Ugh, not a pleasant experience at all. I am feeling much better now, nearly back to my usual routine. Sadly, I didn’t get to craft on the weekend (I had big crafty plans), but hopefully I will make the cards I planned sometime this week. Today’s card was made quite some time ago and it was a coloring experiment. I love the way it turned out!

CARD DETAILS
I love bright vivid colors, especially for Christmas cards. I was cleaning my craft room a few weeks ago and I came across Simon’s Poinsettia Background stamp. It is an older product, but a very beautiful one (I’ve shared another card using this stamp HERE). I felt inspired to make a card.
My coloring experiment was using a red pen from Jane Davenport (I use this pen from time to time to color little red accents on my projects) in combination with Copic markers. I have tried something similar here but on a much smaller scale.
Follow these instructions step-by-step to re-create this card:
- Stamp Poinsettia background onto Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock in Memento Tuxedo Black ink. Use MISTI stamping tool for stamping. Trim background to 4 1/4″x 5 1/2″.
- Color the leaves using YG93, YG95, YG99 Copic markers.
- Begin coloring the red leaves using R39 Copic marker adding shading. Color the rest of the leaf space using a red Jane Davenport pen.
I say color “leaves” red and not “petals” because poinsettias aren’t flowers. Something I learned a few years ago. The large colourful bracts of the poinsettia are often mistaken for flower petals, but they are in fact leaves. The flowers are actually the tiny yellow berry-like structures at the centre of each leaf bract, which are called cyathia.
- Color the center using a combo of red and green markers.
- Foil a dotted border using Essential Rectangles set in gold foil using Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil System or similar. Adhere panel to A2 white top folding card base.
- Cut a sentiment from Simon’s Sentiment Strips Reverse Holiday and foam mount to card.
Using a red pen over a slightly darker Copic marker gave me really vivid results. The pen is semi-opaque and gives the most vibrant red I’ve ever seen. I quite enjoyed coloring this card and I’ll probably use this pen for coloring again in the future.

Wow, Yana! Quite the eye catcher with the vivid red color. Love it!
Stunning and gorgeous!
Absolutely gorgeous!!
Sorry you were under the weather and hope you’re feeling better now. I love this card and tried to get one of those red markers but seems only Spellbinders has them. None of my other suppliers that have Spellbinders products do.
This card is gorgeous–thanks for sharing!
Wow!!! Stunning!!!!
