Altenew | Alcohol Markers Release - Royal Flowers Thank You Card. Blog Hop + Giveaway

Hello there! Thank you so much for stopping by today to help celebrate Alcohol Marker Release from Altenew. This is something completely new and absolutely incredible! I remember how excited I was when Altenew came out with their first ink pads 2 years ago – they did not disappoint one bit. Hopefully, these markers won’t either (I am extremely happy with them so far).

I’ll admit, I was very skeptical about these markers from Altenew. I have Copics, I have Chameleon Pens, I even have Trimcraft First Edition Markers (also alcohol based). I didn’t think I’d like these by Altenew. But you never judge the book by its cover (not that there’s something wrong with the “cover” of these markers). I gave them a try – and oh boy!

I first tested these markers on a piece of Simon’s 120 LB White Cardstock (I love this paper for Copic coloring) – I colored from light to dark to see how the colors would blend, tried both nibs to see how they apply ink. I loved the result!

Next, I grabbed a sheet of Neenah Solar White paper (this is my most used paper for stamping) and stamped Altenew Adore You flowers and leaves using Simon’s Intense Black ink.

You can use these markers with Altenew existing inks for “no-line coloring” technique. You do have to use alcohol-friendly ink to color with these, so you can’t stamp ouline images with Altenew crisp dye inks and color, the outline will bleed.

The marker set being released today contains reds, blues and greens so I decided to use reds and greens to color my images. I went with “from dark to light” application and first added my darkest color, next my medium and blended everything with the lightest. I later came in with the darkest color again to intensify the shadows.

I did find those harder to blend on Neenah vs Simon’s 120 LB paper, but it’s harder to blend Copics there too. I will definitely have to play with these markers some more to learn more about them, but my initial impression is WOW.

One of the reasons I was on the fence about these at first is I decided to really commit to growing my Copic collection and to get to know my Copic markers better (I recently did Favorite Copic Color Combo chart & post). This was just my personal reason. Nonetheless, these markers from Altenew are a great alternative to Copics. I don’t want to do a comparison, but I will say – they are really great (and nobody is asking me to say/write this, I truly enjoyed using them). One thing I loved – the colors, like with Altenew inks, are grouped together for easy blending. I don’t know how well future colors will blend (and I don’t know if there will be future colors or if there will be re-inkers or replacement nibs), but they do take the guesswork of what colors to use together now.

I cut my colored images out and used a black marker to color the edges of the paper to hide the white. This set comes with a black marker, so I didn’t even have to reach for my Copic black. I also used a white gel pen and drew white dots in the flower centers.

I went with my Perfect Cardmaking formula and used an elegant gold trim, pretty paper – Spicy Yogurt, foam mounted flowers and leaves on top, added a simple Thank You sentiment and finished this card off with a few Rose Gold sequins and clear droplets from Pretty Pink Posh.

Before I go here’s a photo of my initial test doodling/drawing/sketching with these markers. I always appreciate photos like these, so I hope you’ll find it useful too (click to enlarge):

Simon Says Stamp | Love Gives Us a Fairytale

Simon Says Stamp | Heat Embossed Lace

Have you seen Simon’s new cling rubber stamps from the Hey Love release? I fell in love with…

  1. An absolutely stunning card. I love this style of card that you do. I love everything about it: the layout, the colouring and colours and the stamp set (I just ordered it!) This is definitely getting pinned.

  2. What a beautiful card. I love Altenew’s ink colours and am so glad these new markers match their inks….BONUS. And yes no guess work as to which markers will blend together, Altenew have thought of that too….DOUBLE BONUS!!! Thanks for explaining all of that Yana. Have a lovely day. Cheers Donna Z 🙂

  3. I have some Spectrum Noir and just bought a small set of Chameleon markers. This is so tempting! I love your work and how quickly you bring new products & ideas to us. Thank you!

  4. Those are beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing! Love how rich this card looks! And I just love florals! Can’t wait to try out these new altenew markers! They look fantastic! And you are so talented girl! 🙂

  5. Oh boy! I do not have any markers at the moment, but after your last two articles about markers (copics and these new altenew) I definitely want to buy few to give them a try! Not sure wich ones, you described both so juicy 🙂

  6. These new markers look great and I love that the colours match their inks. I have the basic sets of spectrum noir markers, but I would love to add these to my collection.

  7. Stunning and very elegant card Yana! Love the contrasting colors and that the markers match the ink line colors. I have some spectrum noir’s and some chameleon pens but I am a novice and still looking for the right markers for me…thanks for the inspiration and generosity! Have a wonderful day!

  8. I love your cards-they are so pretty. Originally I bought some cheap knockoff markers from China. Bullet tipped. I have about 6 skin toned Copics. I bought some of the Nuvo markers (I thought they were brush tip ) . I have been reading Sandy Allnocks blog post about what Copic markers to buy first. I like her strong contrast in colouring. Copics are expensive but the blending groups of colours Copic has is amazing. I was going to buy a few at a time. Then the Altenew markers came out…! So I researched some more and came across Spectrum Noir Illustrators! They have a brush nib too and look extra juicy, and they are so much cheaper. BUT yet again Copics colours and blending group options are fantastic. I am not sure if I like SN blending groups as much as Sandy Allnocks Copic suggestions. And the Altenew ones seems like other alcohol markers with the Copic style brush tip. (But cheaper than Copic)I read your post about Copic colours too. Very helpful thank you I have tried some markers and I am struggling to decide to go down the path of these new, affordable brush tip markers or to stick with Copic because of their blending group options……any suggestions? Maybe I wait a while longer and see if more colours come out and more comparisons are done….

    1. Hi Cherie,

I was reading your post and I to have copic markers. You had said you were watching you tubes and I don’t know if you have ever watched Scrapbooking Made Simple. She has a lot of you tubes ( a new one every Saturday) and great information on the different markers, she is located in Santa Clarita , California. she sells her copics for 5.25. maybe her information may help you. I was wondering if the Altenew markers could be used the Copics since they are both Alcohol based markers. . I think I am going to wait and see if anyone uses them with the copics and what they think. I would probably buy these now if I didn’t have so many copics and the copic can be refilled. I think the Altenew marker colors are pretty and a good price.

  9. Wow, stunning card! I have only just bought 3 grey Copics for shading and have never been tempted to buy any colours but I’m really liking all the examples I have seen using these Altenew markers so I may just succumb to these…

Like what you see? Drop me a comment! Thanks!
