Altenew | Alcohol Markers Release - Royal Flowers Thank You Card. Blog Hop + Giveaway

Hello there! Thank you so much for stopping by today to help celebrate Alcohol Marker Release from Altenew. This is something completely new and absolutely incredible! I remember how excited I was when Altenew came out with their first ink pads 2 years ago – they did not disappoint one bit. Hopefully, these markers won’t either (I am extremely happy with them so far).

I’ll admit, I was very skeptical about these markers from Altenew. I have Copics, I have Chameleon Pens, I even have Trimcraft First Edition Markers (also alcohol based). I didn’t think I’d like these by Altenew. But you never judge the book by its cover (not that there’s something wrong with the “cover” of these markers). I gave them a try – and oh boy!

I first tested these markers on a piece of Simon’s 120 LB White Cardstock (I love this paper for Copic coloring) – I colored from light to dark to see how the colors would blend, tried both nibs to see how they apply ink. I loved the result!

Next, I grabbed a sheet of Neenah Solar White paper (this is my most used paper for stamping) and stamped Altenew Adore You flowers and leaves using Simon’s Intense Black ink.

You can use these markers with Altenew existing inks for “no-line coloring” technique. You do have to use alcohol-friendly ink to color with these, so you can’t stamp ouline images with Altenew crisp dye inks and color, the outline will bleed.

The marker set being released today contains reds, blues and greens so I decided to use reds and greens to color my images. I went with “from dark to light” application and first added my darkest color, next my medium and blended everything with the lightest. I later came in with the darkest color again to intensify the shadows.

I did find those harder to blend on Neenah vs Simon’s 120 LB paper, but it’s harder to blend Copics there too. I will definitely have to play with these markers some more to learn more about them, but my initial impression is WOW.

One of the reasons I was on the fence about these at first is I decided to really commit to growing my Copic collection and to get to know my Copic markers better (I recently did Favorite Copic Color Combo chart & post). This was just my personal reason. Nonetheless, these markers from Altenew are a great alternative to Copics. I don’t want to do a comparison, but I will say – they are really great (and nobody is asking me to say/write this, I truly enjoyed using them). One thing I loved – the colors, like with Altenew inks, are grouped together for easy blending. I don’t know how well future colors will blend (and I don’t know if there will be future colors or if there will be re-inkers or replacement nibs), but they do take the guesswork of what colors to use together now.

I cut my colored images out and used a black marker to color the edges of the paper to hide the white. This set comes with a black marker, so I didn’t even have to reach for my Copic black. I also used a white gel pen and drew white dots in the flower centers.

I went with my Perfect Cardmaking formula and used an elegant gold trim, pretty paper – Spicy Yogurt, foam mounted flowers and leaves on top, added a simple Thank You sentiment and finished this card off with a few Rose Gold sequins and clear droplets from Pretty Pink Posh.

Before I go here’s a photo of my initial test doodling/drawing/sketching with these markers. I always appreciate photos like these, so I hope you’ll find it useful too (click to enlarge):

Simon Says Stamp | Love Gives Us a Fairytale

Simon Says Stamp | Heat Embossed Lace

Have you seen Simon’s new cling rubber stamps from the Hey Love release? I fell in love with…

  1. Really gorgeous and inspirational!
I have alcohol based markers but these look so much more vibrant.

    1. Forgot to answer your question. I have several types of alcohol markers but never got really comfortable with them. My last purchase was a set of Copics, that I have just started to play with. I do love the softer brush nib of the Copics more than the bullet nibs of my other markers.

  2. Gorgeous card! I have never used alcohol based markers. I have been intimidated about choosing the right colors and about how many markers I need, etc. I like the fact that these new Altenew markers come in color families like their wonderful inks. Takes away a lot of the guesswork and the fear so I’m thinking seriously about giving these a try. Thanks for sharing your feelings/impressions regarding these new markers and your beautiful card!

  3. Your card is stunning !
I’m using the Touch markers now. But I find the tip’s choice of the Altenew markers really excellent : I never use the large tip of my Touch markers and I’d love to have the brush !

  4. I currently have Copics, and I love them! Trying to build my color stash…slowly. Love the colors you used on your card and that gold element is perfect! May have to get a few of those!

  5. Yana, your card is gorgeous and the colors are wonderful. I have Distress markers and a few Copics. I love everything Altenew does so I’m sure I’ll like the markers as well.

  6. Thanks for the objective comments. Yana, what coloring medium would you use for the outline stamp that would blend well with alcohol markers for the coloring process. Thanks.

  7. I love the look of your card. I have some spectrum noir markers but don’t really play with them. I always think they are too dark. Thanks for a chance to win.

  8. I don’t have alcohol markers because I didn’t want to make the investment and they looked too hard to learn how to use effectively. However, these new ones from Altenew might just change my mind!

  9. The blended colors are amazing! I have some Spectrum Noir markers and have fun trying to blend them, but have not mastered blending yet. I keep trying! I wonder if these markers would be easier to work with.

  10. Wow, Yana – you always impress me with your amazing artistic talents. Thai card is simply breathtaking. I do have alcholhol markers n my stash BUT have never managed to achieve your level of excellence:)

  11. Beautiful card, lovely colours! Thank you for a very informative post.
I have a lot of ProMarkers, lots of colours and I’m happy with them so far.

  12. Your card is gorgeous! Altenew’s floral stamps never disappoint.
I have Shin Han, Spectrum Noir, and Copics. I, too, have decided to grow myour Copic collection.

  13. Yana, this card is gorgeous!!!! So very pretty. Thank you so much for sharing and also for the opportunity to win a gift card. Very generous of you! Thank you and have a great day!

  14. Your Perfect Cardmaking Formula really works! This is just Beautiful! The markers have lovely colors to choose from. I think they will be on my list since they match the inks.

  15. Your perfect card formula is just that! I love the metallic touches which make a simple card stand out.
Thanks for sharing your intial experimenting with the markers!

  16. Your work is beautiful!! I am loving the vibrancy of these markers, definitely on my must have list.

  17. I have Copic markers as well, I love Altenew inks especially how vibrant the colors are. It looks like they have a hit on their alcohol markers as well. Beautifully colored flowers!

  18. I have Shin Han alcohol markers, which were a gift, but since I was not given various shades of the same color, it’s difficult to blend/shade. I think the Altenew color families would be easier to work with. Loved your card!

  19. Thank you for your honest opinion of these markers. I don’t have copics, but would like to color with alcohol base markers. I recently bought some alcohol markers at Michaels, not the best brand, but I’m new to coloring. These markers seem like something I would like to give a shot at.

  20. Your coloring is always so perfect and the card is so pretty, love your use of the gold frames behind your focal point.

  21. I don’t own alcohol markers, but from what I’ve seen on this hop thus far, these look amazing and blend beautifully! Your card is amazing and beautiful, too!
